چکیده

Abstract Introduction Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in Malaysia. Whilst many studies have reported the aetiology pneumonia Western countries, epidemiology Malaysia remains poorly understood. As carriage prerequisite for disease, we sought to improve our understanding and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) respiratory tract pathogens The rural communities Sarawak are an understudied part Malaysian population were focus this study, allowing us gain better bacterial population. Methods A population-based survey was undertaken participants all ages from Sarawak, Nasopharyngeal, nasal, mouth oropharyngeal swabs taken. Bacteria isolated each swab identified by culture-based methods susceptibility testing conducted disk diffusion or E test. Results 140 recruited five communities. Klebsiella pneumoniae most commonly (30.0%), followed Staphylococcus aureus (20.7%), Streptococcus (10.7%), Haemophilus influenzae (9.3%), Moraxella catarrhalis (6.4%), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (6.4%) Neisseria meningitidis (5.0%). Of 21 S. isolated, 33.3 14.3% serotypes included 13 valent PCV (PCV13) 10 (PCV10) respectively. 33.8% species resistant at least one antibiotic, however except susceptible type antibiotic. Conclusion To knowledge, first study East We provide valuable timely data regarding AMR associated with pneumonia. Further surveillance necessary monitor changes prevalence upper emergence AMR, particularly as added National Immunisation Programme (NIP).

Continental Shelf Sediments of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo

Sediment distributions in deep sea influence the benthic community structure and thus play an important role in shaping the marine ecosystem. Several studies on sediment characteristics had been conducted in South China Sea (SCS), but only limited to coastal areas of regions within SCS territories. Therefore, this study was carried out to analyze the benthic sediment profile in an area beyond 1...

Alterations in salivary IgA levels in infectious and inflammatory disorders of upper respiratory tract

Background: The airway surfaces are one of the most common ways of entry of infectious agents. Oral cavity associated lymphoid tissues are inductive site of humoral immune responses in inflammatory and infectious disorders of the upper respiratory tract. These lymphoid tissues play important roles in the induction of salivary IgA. The impact of upper respiratory tract diseases on salivary IgA p...

Antibiotic prescribing for upper respiratory tract infections in sarawak district hospitals.

Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) is mostly viral in aetiology, but patients presenting with such complaints are frequently prescribed antibiotics. This may result in increased development of antimicrobial resistance. The objectives of this study are to determine the choice and proportion of oral antibiotics prescribed in patients with URTI, in a Sarawak district hospital setting. All ou...

Molecular epidemiology of pneumococcal carriage among children with upper respiratory tract infections in Hanoi, Vietnam.

To investigate the molecular epidemiology of pneumococcal nasopharyngeal carriage in Hanoi, Vietnam, we studied 84 pneumococcal strains retrieved from children with upper respiratory tract infections. Serotypes 23F (32%), 19F (21%), 6B (13%), and 14 (10%) were found most often. A significant number of strains were antibiotic resistant. Fifty-two percent of the strains were (intermediate) resist...

Upper Respiratory Tract Infections

The upper respiratory system includes the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, and larynx with subglottic area of trachea. In the normal circumstances, air enters the respiratory system through nostrils where it is filtered, humidified, and warmed inside the nasal cavity. Conditioned air passes through pharynx, larynx, and trachea and then enters in lower respiratory system. Dysfunction of any part of ...
